Safety/Crisis Intervention Policy

The Franklin School Committee will make every effort to assure the safety of students during the school day, on school property and at school functions. The Superintendent of Schools is responsible for developing and implementing a district-wide policy that provides a safe atmosphere for students by providing proper supervision for student activities, educating students on safety in school and safety in extracurricular activities and travel to and from school.

In addition, the Superintendent shall implement a district-wide procedure for school system response in the event of a crisis. A crisis is any event, which threatens the safety and security of the school environment, staff or students in a school-related setting.

The focus of the crisis intervention policy is to implement procedures to prevent a crisis situation from occurring, to deal with an immediate or ongoing crisis situation, and to address short or long-term consequences of a crisis.

Protocols will be developed by the Superintendent, in conjunction with Police and Fire Departments, for system-wide and building level response to crises, specifically addressed to coordinating efforts with or informing vital local agencies or school constituencies such as: medical and counseling personnel, law enforcement officials, school staff and parents.

The Franklin Public Schools Emergency Response Plan is reviewed annually by the Superintendent or their designee and is disseminated to building Principals no later than October 1st.
